Both are used to remove unwanted face and body hair but there are a few differences between the 2, let's check them out:
Soft wax is the OG, athough it's definitely been perfected over the last 100 years since it first hit the market. It's applied thin and taken off with depilatory paper (aka wax strips). Soft wax does a great job and grabbing peach fuzz and really fine hairs, it exfoliates the skin more than hard wax and generally you only wax the area once with this wax because it does a great job the first time!
Hard wax was invented about 50 years later and, to be honest, they did a killer job at marketing as a "gentler wax". Hard wax is applied thicker, dries and is taken off on its own (no papers needed). It does a great job at picking up thick coarse hairs, but it does has trouble with fine/vellus hairs, and can be applied to the skin more than once. It's less exfoliating than soft wax and doesn't have a stickiness to it once dried.
Some Esthetician prefer soft wax vs. hard wax or vice versa. Personally, I specialize in both! I can help my clients achieve their skincare goals more efficiently by using the wax appropriate for their skin and their goals.
